A rule extension extends the capability of a rule. The extension adds conditions to the rule, which might modify the standard conditions. For example, you can assign an extension to an overtime rule for Event-Based Overtime, which provides for extra pay based on the number of times in a week an employee has already worked overtime. Currently, only extensions to overtime rules are supported.
Use the Edit Rule Extension Editor (Setup > Pay Policies > Work Rule Building Blocks > Overtime) to set up rule extensions. Select an overtime rule, and then click Extension.
You can assign the following rule extension to an overtime rule:
The Event-Based Overtime rule extension provides for extra pay based on the number of times in a week an employee has already worked overtime. When you assign this rule extension to an overtime rule, the system counts the number of occurrences of another overtime rule (Events) within a week's time period. After a specified number of events have occurred, the rule extension overrides the default hours amount of the extended overtime rule.
An occurrence is a day on which the overtime rule being counted has been triggered. Only one such occurrence is counted per day.
For example, an employee might be paid double time after working 8 hours in a day and triple time after working 10 hours in a day. You can use an extension so that on the fourth occurrence within a week of working over 8 hours in a day, the employee is paid triple time after working 8 hours instead of after 10 hours. For more information, see Rule Extension parameters.
This table lists the extensions that you can assign to a rule. It also describes their associated parameters and the format in which you can enter data.

Description |
Valid values |
---|---|---|---|
EventBasedOvertime |
|||
|
Event to be counted |
The name of the rule whose occurrences (Events) are counted. This is the name of another overtime rule that is being paid. It is the events of this other type of overtime that are counted. Note: An Event is a day with occurrences of the rule with this name. |
The name must exactly match the name of the rule being counted. |
|
Number of events to trigger new overtime limit |
The number of events that trigger the new overtime limit for this overtime rule. |
Enter a minimum of 1. |
|
New overtime limit |
The new hours amount for the overtime rule being extended. After the rule extension conditions are met, the overtime rule being extended is triggered at this new hours amount, rather than its regular limit amount. For example, if an overtime rule calculates extra pay after 10 hours, and you enter a new overtime limit of 8 hours, then overtime is paid after 8 hours, rather than 10 hours. Note: Do not enter a new overtime limit value that is less than the limit amount for the overtime rule being counted. If you enter a smaller value, the limit amount for the overtime rule being counted is used. |
Must be in the format of the locale settings. |
|
Reset count on |
The number that corresponds to the day of the week to begin counting the events. Note: The rule counts events only within a week starting on the reset day. The count resets each week on the reset day. |
1 = Monday |
